As of today, the definition of lead-free packages has not been formalized. The EU defines this as Pb <1000 ppm on lead finish and solder balls; and JEIDA: Pb <1000 ppm. JEDEC initially proposed a level of <2000 ppm, but has now decided that JEDEC will not define a ppm level for lead-free. With contract manufacturers and service providers located globally, varying definitions can complicate the qualification and selection of SMT materials and processes. As the EU directive is formalized, we can only hope that a global standard is specified with one lead-free definition.
